Went to the Tate Modern’s Edvard Munch exhibition last night and was really taken aback by a lot of the concepts that were on display throughout the exhibition.
His off kilter use of human figures in the foreground of many of his paintings were the most strikingly unique element to his work. His work The Scream and its various incarnations are the best known of his paintings and this technique but his body of work is so much more than this bastion of pop culture.
Cinema which was developing as an art form in the early part of the twentieth century when he was reaching his zenith as an artist often had images of trains, people or horses charging towards the camera…this technique seems to have fascinated him and he deploys it in many of his works. My personal favourite is probably Workers returning home. Which incidentally also scares the shit out of me for some reason…
